“Everybody should engage in this way with their users. Especially if you have complex populations, you need experts who can lead with their knowledge like Lena did for us.”

Client, Director, Queensland government demonstration project

Design better public housing, for everyone.

This co-design and research project helped inform the design strategy for a new type of social housing development, built on shared community and service space.

The problem

Public Housing is often designed to be cost-effective and not much else. Rarely are tenants directly involved or considered in the design of dwellings. Social interactions are often designed out of estates for fear of conflict between neighbours. This project sought to reinvent that notion and create the foundations for community, and better service delivery.

The project

  • Ethnographic research in housing estates with tenants

  • Academic research into social housing developments

  • Co-design with tenants on core project aspects

My role

  • I led the project from A-Z, collaborating with two client teams and their stakeholders

Deliverables

  • Insights report

  • Design guidelines and recommendations for the architectural concept and design of the built
