Improve disability inclusion in Social Housing

This project for the Queensland Government Architect’s Office identified barriers to inclusion in social housing tenants living with disability. It created recommendations leading into the government’s Good Design Guidelines for public housing.

The problem

The physical environment is only one aspect of living with disability. Housing guidelines and regulations only tell part of the stories about barriers to inclusive housing.

My role

I led the project from A-Z, supported by a junior colleague.

Project

  • A research and journey mapping project to inform strategic policy guidelines.

  • Research with a complex cohort covering multiple challenges including mental health, disability, unemployment etc.

Deliverables

  • Deep insights report establishing a baseline of knowledge on clients living with disability in public housing

  • Detailed guidelines for adjusting policy and design guidelines for people living with disability

  • Detailed guidelines for service design for individual services to follow
